• Receivers of tips only need a cellphone number.
• Receivers DON'T need: a smartphone, a bank account, Zapper, uPhil or a QR code.
• Tips (or payments) above R100 only cost 2.6% (for when you want to pay your domestic worker). This makes uPhil cheaper than eWallet.
• Tips below R100 only cost 4%.
• As Phil (the Tipper) you pay Zero fees.
• Spending tips instore is 100% FREE.
• Recipients can spend their money where they are already spending their money which is at Shoprite and U$ave (they can also spend it at Super Cash and Carry, Computicket, Checkers, Shoprite and Checkers liquor, K'nect Checkers Hyper or at any of the other Shoprite Group stores).
• Recipients can send their money to other money market users for FREE, which opens them up to the Shoprite network of more than 20 million customers. These include taxi drivers, informal Spaza shop owners and many more.
• Money can be used to pay bills and buy airtime online.
• Zero monthly fees, Zero load fees and Zero transaction fees when using the Shoprite Money Market Account.
• No FICA or KYC required to use the money market account (they will however have to FICA when they want to withdraw their cash).
• Tips are paid out DAILY.

THEY DO NOT HAVE TO!
The first day after the receiver gets their first tip they receive two messages:
1. From uPhil explaining everything and
2. From Shoprite with instructions on the Money Market Account, the amount they have received and how to spend their money.
ANYONE that has a cellphone number: Car guards, waiters, fuel attendants, domestic workers, informal spaza owners, your kids... (this list is infinite). The best part is - they do not even have to know what uPhil is or how it works.
Tips are paid out daily (Monday to Friday). Tips received on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays are paid out on Mondays. All tips for a specific "cellphone number" (that tippers used as reference) are calculated and paid to a Shoprite Money Market account for that number. The receiver gets an SMS from Shoprite telling them how much they have received and they can then spend their cash at any of the following shops: Shoprite, Checkers, Checkers Hyper, Usave, Computicket, K’nect, Super Cash and Carry, participating Spaza shops and Shoprite LiquorShop. Tips can also be paid out with E-wallet at a fee of R5 + R2/R100. Receivers can also leave their tips in their Shoprite accounts and withdraw the cash at Shoprite (R5 fee) as soon as this functionality rolls out in Q2 2021.
• Going cashless eliminates the exchange of coins, preventing the spread of Covid19.
• Have you ever told the person at the Phil ‘ling station not to check your tyres because you knew you didn’t have any silver to tip him with? Not anymore!
• Who even has cash these days?
• Nobody wants to be "that aw' Phil guy" - the one who spends R1000 to Phil up a tank but does not have R5 to Phil an empty wallet.
• You never have to worry about giving away your last coin - knowing you won’t have anything for the person at your next stop.
• Tips can only be spent in-store - Phil ‘ling a stomach at home instead of a liver at the Bar or Shebeen.
• It is safer for everybody not having to walk around with cash.
• You have better control over your "tipping budget" because you can see how much you tip on your bank statement.
• It is an easy way to be a Phil 'anthropist - small change can make a BIG difference in someone’s life.
• It is greener.
We could go on, but you get the point...
The amount you select is the exact amount that is deducted from your account.
The payment Gateway takes 2.2% + VAT from that value and 1.5% goes to uPhil.
Example:
You pay: R5
Receiver gets: R4,79
Payment Gateway takes: 11c
VAT: 2c
uPhil commission: 8c
Once the receiver has been paid out they can spend their tips at any of the connected shops for FREE. They will also be able to withdraw their cash at any Shoprite at a cost of R5 (coming soon).
There are zero other costs! Not for you or for the receiver.
Absolutely. We have the following precautions in place in case your phone is stollen and the thief is somehow able to unlock it (password or fingerprint):
• All tips go to the uPhil account first, we can therefore pay any fraudulent tips back as long as you notify us of the fraudulent tip before the coming Friday.
• If we notice any irregular tips (Ex: three consecutive tips to the same number), we immediately notify the Pyment Gateway to temporarily block your account.
• The Payment Gateway has their own security as well. For instance: if you try to make two payments of the same amount within a couple of minutes from each other, the second transaction will automatically fail.
• Lastly, any tip larger than R50 will require an OTP. This means that a thief would need your phone (unlocked) and your card. For certain banks (like FNB) they would then also need the login details to your banking App.
We have 2 types of tips:
• Vouchers: Coke, Dog Food, Bread and Maize.
• Normal tips that can be spent on anything: R2, R5, R10, R20, R50 and "Own Amount".
Vouchers are converted to their cash value.
Currently we offer Zapper as Payment method.
(MasterPass and SnapScan coming soon)
Signing up and paying with Zapper is incredibly fast.
• Download the Zapper app:
iPhone /
Android /
Huawei.
• Complete the signup process.
(The steps above are only done once)
• Tap "Tip" (uPhil logo).
• Tap the amount you wish to tip.
• Fill in the Receivers Cellphone Number.
Lastly: Once a receiver has received their first tip on uPhil, we send them a QR code. These codes are linked to their cellphone numbers. The receiver may present you with these codes which you can then scan. To scan a code, open Zapper and scan the corresponding code (once MasterPass and SnapScan launches you'll be able to scan the same code with these apps). Simply enter the amount you wish to tip and tap Pay. Please note – you can scan a code through your car window - remember to stay safe!
Ozow is an instant EFT payment platform. This means that when you pay through Ozow, you'll be instructed to open your banking App and make the payment like you would normally do an EFT.
